Kitchen Brains to Expand Into Industrial Controls Following MCS Acquisition
Kitchen Brains, a FEDA manufacturer member specializing in intelligent control systems for the foodservice industry, has acquired Micro Control Systems (MCS) and its related company Sensing Technologies (STI), both based in Fort Myers, Florida. MCS designs and manufactures advanced controllers, sensors and compressors for commercial and industrial HVAC/R markets, while STI develops high-performance precision sensors for HVAC/R and other mission-critical industrial applications.

Report Finds Highest Number of Operators Making Equipment Purchases in 20 Months
The restaurant industry was flat in August, as higher same-store sales were offset by dampened customer traffic levels, according to the latest Restaurant Performance Index from the National Restaurant Association. However, the data shows that more operators are expecting a sales improvement and are planning future spending.

Federal Government Shutdown Already Affecting Businesses A prolonged shutdown is likely to amplify issues for businesses. The previous shutdown, which lasted 35 days from December 2018 to January 2019, cost the country an estimated $11 billion in economic output, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The Small Business Administration’s loan programs, which normally support $860 million worth of loans for 1,600 small companies every week, are currently closed. Companies that are federal contractors have had to stop work on projects and air travel is seeing more delays due to limited federal staffing in air traffic control.

Trade Bill Would Codify Baseline Tariff, Impose New Rates on Chinese Goods The Secure Trade Act (H.R. 4978) would impose a 10 percent baseline tariff on all goods entering the United States, essentially codifying the baseline tariffs announced by the White House earlier this year. The 10 percent rate would stack with any other tariffs on various types of imports, but it would also allow the president to reduce the baseline tariff for specific items if such a reduction is determined to be in the national interest.
